Master Thesis Proposal - Simulation & Sensor Fusion for Autonomous Vehicle

Do you want to explore the frontier of autonomous systems?

In this thesis, we invite one or two students to configure and deploy a simulated autonomous vehicle equipped with for example LiDAR, IMU and camera. The simulation-first approach enables freedom to test and evaluate different sensor fusion SLAM algorithms, with the possibility to later transfer the work to a physical RC car for real-world validation.

About the project

The aim is to use a realistic simulation environment to deploy different SLAM algorithms on an autonomous vehicle which will navigate an indoor setting (e.g. office environment). Within this scope, you will:

  • Configure and deploy sensor models in a simulator.
  • Investigate SLAM- and navigation algorithms optimized for real-time performance.
  • Explore multi-sensor fusion approaches to improve robustness in sub-optimal conditions.
  • Apply your solution to a real RC car platform and compare simulation vs. reality, if time permits it.

Possible research questions

  • What is the impact of multi-sensor fusion on accuracy and robustness in a simulated enviorment?
  • How can SLAM algorithms be optimized for real-time use in dynamic and/or static environments?
  • Which sensors and algorithms are best suited for indoor autonomous navigation?
  • How closely can simulation predict the performance of a real system?

Who are you?

We are looking for one or two master’s students with an interest in robotics, autonomous systems, and simulation. Experience with programming (Python or C++), ROS, or sensor technologies is valuable but not strictly required. Most importantly, you are curious and motivated to push the boundaries of autonomy. We also prefer you to have good knowledge in both Swedish and English. 

To give you the best possible support during your thesis, we’d like you to be able to come to the office connected to the project and spend most of your time working from there.
