Renewables Civil Engineer

We are seeking a Civil Engineer with a strong background in utility-scale energy projects, particularly wind, solar, and hybrid projects. Are you an enthusiastic advocate for renewable energy and energy transition? Then this might be the position for you.   
 
In this position you will be based in our Solna office in Stockholm, focusing on projects in the Nordic region. You will play a pivotal role in supporting our projects in the Nordics from the civil engineering and constructability perspective. 

 

About the role

Join the dynamic and innovative Engineering & Technology department (E&T) at Fortum, where we spearhead the engineering of solar, wind and BESS projects. As the technical center of excellence, we drive engineering solutions for project development, construction, operations, and research and innovation activities. As a crucial member of the E&T department, our Engineering team takes charge of all solar PV and wind projects engineering, providing vital technical support to our Development, Construction, and Procurement teams. We are at the forefront of evaluating, selecting, and analyzing major components for these projects.

 

We are looking for a Civil Engineer with extensive experience in utility-scale energy projects, particularly in wind, solar, and hybrid projects. The ideal candidate will manage civil engineering activities, ensure compliance with local regulations, assess site conditions, and translate project requirements into engineering solutions. They will oversee relationships with consulting firms, conduct site inspections, and prepare technical proposals, focusing on our projects in Sweden while collaborating with our Nordic colleagues.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Understand local legislation and regulations to develop guidelines and tools for project activities.
  • Understand the impact of varying soil conditions, topography, existing structures and past site use to the engineering of a plant.
  • Understand project requirements and translate them into engineering solutions.
  • Understand and assess project specific construction risks and site constraints.
  • Manage civil engineering activities during design, permitting, and pre-engineering  for wind, solar and BESS projects.
  • Review and evaluate geotechnical and engineering calculations and assessments 
  • Manage relationships with third-party consulting firms, review civil and structural engineering designs, and ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Undertake site inspections, inspect works, and respond to technical queries from the development and construction team.
  • Prepare, review and negotiate civil engineering technical proposals and assist in contractor selection.

About you
This role requires a candidate who can balance a broad spectrum of commercial and technical demands, focusing strongly civil engineering and constructability items, in different wind, solar and BESS project development phases.   


We are seeking a self-driven individual who can manage multiple projects and stakeholders effectively. You should be a collaborative communicator with negotiation skills and a results-oriented mindset, thriving in a multicultural environment. Additionally, we value an open-minded innovator with a strategic mindset, capable of advancing renewable energy initiatives through innovative civil engineering solutions. 

 

Besides the above, we see that you bring the following background: 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil or structural engineering or a related field
  • Solid understanding of the Swedish building codes, key industry contacts. Knowledge from the renewables value chain considered as a bonus point.  
  • Several years of experience in utility-scale industrial construction projects engineering, proposals technical specifications preparations and negotiations.
  • Knowledge of wind and solar PV utility-scale projects construction principles and practices considered as a bonus point.
  • Proficiency in MS 365 and civil engineering applications.
  • Familiarity with PV system components and Balance of Systems (BOS) or Wind power systems and Balance of Plant (BOP) in relation to civil engineering items.
  • Strong focus on safety and compliance within the local legislation.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Swedish and English is critical; additional language skills, especially Finnish or Norwegian, are highly valued.  
  • A willingness to travel locally and internationally based on project needs. Usually 1-2 times per month, for a 1-3 day period (Focusing in Sweden and occasionally in Finland or Norway, but also within EU to attend conferences and contractors technical evaluations or site visits).
